Favorite Author: Don't make me choose one! I fall in and out of love with authors. Today it is John Irving. Tomorrow it may be Anne Rice, Ngaio Marsh, or Margaret Atwood. Or someone else.
Favorite book or poem: Tonight it is "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou (which is what led me here.) Tomorrow it will be e.e. cummings or maybe someone I read here.
Favorite Likes: I have a list of things I like on my fridge. It reads like the lyrics to "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" (which I know all the words to, in addition to most of the other songs in "The Sound of Music"--a telling detail.) Tell us about yourself: I am the middle child of a family of eleven with siblings born relatively close together (only 11 months apart in the case of two younger brothers).
My family was poor to the point of being destitute, however, I really didn’t know that I was from a poor family, in fact, before his school experience, I thought my family was well off.
I entered elementary school in 1960.
I was unable to "focus" on lessons, and was passed on from grade to grade as a slow and inattentive student (the system during this era blatantly classified students as low, medium, and fast achievers). NOTE: This made it alot easier to be singled out by other students as "dumb" or "nerdy."
I failed socially and became labeled a loner.
My clothing was usually homemade or passed down.
My shoes were worn to the point of falling apart (they flapped when I walked).
When I ran out of school supplies, I would erase previous assignments, and reuse the paper (as long as my eraser held out).
For lunch, sack lunches were the norm (usually a sandwich and homemade snack), sacks were to be saved and used for at least a week at a time, and they were usually an odd size (left-over grocery bags, etc.).
I tried out for every sport that was offered and was cut each time.
Near the end of twelfth grade I discovered that I was not going to have enough credits to graduate and consequently dropped out.
I had several brushes with the law during this time of my life.
I eventually was given a choice between jail or the Marine Corps so I chose the Marine Corps (this was my first step in the right direction because it taught me a great deal about self discipline, and the possibility of achievement).
While in the Marine Corps I was required to take and pass a G.E.D.
Also while in the Marine Corps I earned several meritorious promotions (promoted from E-1 to E-5 in less than two years), and received one meritorious mass and two meritorious promotions prior to being honorably discharged.
After being discharged I worked several dead end jobs and eventually became addicted to alcohol.
I eventually overcame the addiction to alcohol, and decided to try going back to school.
I did not have enough basic algebra skills to pass a simple college entrance exam, and was diagnosed as ADD (inattentive), dyslexic (processing problem -- not addressed in the 60’s), and a 4MAT type 4, right brain learner.
I eventually taught myself basic algebra (along with various other subjects) so that I could attend college.
I studied civil engineering technology and ended up making the deans list.
After earning an associate of science degree, I went to work for the small community of Rupert, Idaho as an entry level engineering technician. Within two years I was promoted all of the way to the top of the organizational chart.
I remained with the community five more years until I got so disgusted with local politics that I resigned (I was politically correct, and told them that I resigned to return to school -- which I did -- but my real motivator was that I was sick of the BS).
I just recently finished my undergraduate work and earned a Baccalaureate of Science Degree (Civil Engineering Technology).
I am now 42 years old, looking for work and attending school full time as a graduate student.
I am a devoted husband and father, I love my family more than life itself (my wife, two sons, a nephew I call son, and a daughter that I've never seen because I was fool) . . . . and it is my firm belief that God does exist, and He does hear and answer prayers. I'm walking, talking proof!
