Criteria, Explanations and the Code

The criteria of this webring is simple...

You must have a site, or pages devoted to poetry or writing. The writing may be your original writing, or presentations of published writers.
Your code and webring box MUST be on your page(s) of poetry or writing. If your poetry and/or writing is contained within a part of your site (not your whole site), you must point the webring to those pages, and only those pages... not to your front door (index.html).

Selections:

A. -  If you would like to join this ring... please do so before going any further

B. -  If you joined this ring BEFORE October 15, 2001 - and already have the fragment on your site, or have questions click here.

C. - If you have already joined this ring AFTER October 15, 2001, and just need the code, continue reading the rest of this page and follow the instructions for obtaining the code for your pages.

As you may or may not know, YAHOO! and WebRing have dissolved their partnership. WebRing is now a separate entity. See... miracles do happen occasionally! (^:^)

Click on the link below that best suits your need for the CODE for the WebRing fragment:

If you want to use the Official and stylish webring fragment of the Poetry Empire Webring.

~OR~

If you want to use the SSNB on your site (the WebRing navigation bar).

Again, if you have not joined the ring yet join this ring now.

Using the custom Official Webring Fragment

To use the beautiful fragments (there are 2 styles to choose from!) for this ring, you must use the following instructions. If you read and follow the instructions, you will see it is easy to do. Most of the letters I receive here are from people asking questions about things that I have thoroughly explained .... but they rushed through things and don't read the directions like I have asked.

IMPORTANT NOTE: From [Par.1] PLEASE REMEMBER, THE URL (PAGE) THAT YOU SPECIFIED THE RING TO POINT TO MUST HAVE THE CUSTOM HTML CODE FRAGMENT OR THE SSNB PLACED ON IT.

You will find this link to pick up your code in the email that you received from WebRing with the SUBJECT LINE: "WebRing: New submission to the Poetry Empire Webring"

The letter reads:

Congratulations,

Your site has been added to the QUEUE area for the
Ring titled "The Poetry Empire Webring"

Here is the information you submitted:

Site Title: YOUR SITE TITLE HERE
Site URL:
http://WWW.YOUR-DOMAIN-HERE.COM
WebRing ID:
poetryempire
Site ID:
XX (((((<---YOUR SITE ID NUMBER WILL BE HERE.))))

•>This is where you have to pay attention!

Your Site ID number. Whatever that number is there... that is the number you will replace in the code below.

Site ID: XX  -  is your site number in the ring. This will never change within this ring it is your number that is unique only to you as it applies to this ring. In the code below in the box -  you will see the word CHEESEBURGER.  Where ever you see the word CHEESEBURGER, substitute it for your Site ID number. NOTE: I used the XX above just for demonstration purposes only. A number will be there for you... THAT IS YOUR site id number within this ring only.

Here are the OFFICIAL codes for the 2 styles of ring fragments.
To make it easier, I have used the word CHEESEBURGER that is easy to see in the code that must be replaced with your Site ID number.

  • In the code, where ever you see the word CHEESEBURGER, substitute it for your Site ID number.

To copy the code, highlight all the text in the form box below and copy it. Paste the code into your page then edit it as per the instructions above. Please continue to read below the box.

You may NOT alter the CODE OR THE IMAGE(s) in ANY WAY, except to add your personal information as described above. (See (*exceptions*) below).  If you do alter the code or change the style of the webring box below -- you will be removed from the ring --- no excuses and no exceptions. I know this sounds harsh... but this is a ring within a production of Spyder's Empire, Inc. --- and uniformity and consistency improves traffic through the ring and allows the people using the ring to navigate effortlessly through the ring.

I have set the colors for the LINKS; both active and viewed, to be shown at YOUR default colors of the page it is placed on.

  • (*exceptions*) It may be necessary to change the font colors so they show up on your page... that is ok with me. The table is set with a white background. Ideally, I would like it to remain white... but I realize that some of you are having trouble with the link colors showing up on a page with a very dark background color --- as the text color you have set for the page is probably very light and will not show up on the fragment. If it is necessary to change the color of the table, please make it to your default background color.

  • You may change the path to the image to correspond to the directory you have it placed in on your server.

I have specified the graphics for the fragments to your root directory. Do not reduce or enlarge it either in actual dimension or file size. Do not substitute any other graphic in it's place. Download the image from below. Simply right click and save it to your own computer... then upload it to YOUR OWN SERVER. If when you paste the code into your page—and the graphic does not show—make sure you have:
   1. Saved the graphic then uploaded it TO YOUR OWN SERVER.
   2. The image path is correct.  If you have saved your images to a directory on your server that is "images,"  your path to the image should be images/name-of-the-file.gif

NOTE: The graphic(s) for the Poetry Empire Webring MUST MUST MUST be uploaded to your OWN SERVER. What this means, is you may NOT link to the graphic source and display the image on your site when the image is being drawn from spydersempire.com. (Some people with websites... especially WebTV users are under the misguided impression that they can simply link to an image from someone else and not have to upload it to their own account. This is very wrong - and if you do, your site will be terminated from the ring immediately. I am sorry to have to appear so harsh, but understand please the magnitude of bandwidth involved here.

If you are using AOL... and are having trouble with the code going nuts on your pages or having trouble with downloading graphics, please CONSULT AOL'S HELP PAGES - or write to AOL directly. SpydersEmpire.com cannot possibly address all of the work-arounds that AOL users must endure to place codes on their sites - nor can SpydersEmpire.com explain why AOL's "html editor" blows apart and all but destroys codes for webrings.  Please contact AOL directly about this. This much is certain - if you use a quality html editor like Microsoft FrontPage2000 as one example to author your web pages ---- you will NEVER have to endure the endless problems with your codes blowing apart on your pages.

CODE PLACEMENT:

When you entered yourself into the webring, you specified the URL that the webring will send visitors to your site. Whatever that URL is - THAT IS THE URL WHERE THE CODE FRAGMENT MUST BE PLACED. You can not have the code fragment or SSNB on any other page but the one you specified when you entered yourself into the ring.

The use of the small pointer button is longer accepted in the webrings of SpydersEmpire.com. You MUST have the code on the same page as the webring is pointing to, or your site will be suspended until such time as the matter is corrected.

USING THE SSNB ON YOUR SITE
(SSNB = Server Side Navigation Bar)

IF YOU WANT TO USE THE SSNB ON YOUR SITE:

WebRing still has the SSNB (server side navigation bar) that they encourage you to use.  Certainly you can use this if you already belong to other rings and have the bar on your site now. If you want to use the SSNB on your site, simply copy and paste the code that you will find at WebRing. You will find this link to pick up your code in the email that you received from WebRing with the SUBJECT LINE: "WebRing: New submission to the Poetry Empire Webring"

In [Par.9] of that letter it reads:

[Par.9] http://F.webring.com/wrman?ring=poetryempire&id=XX&edit
(((((WHERE THE XX IN THE ABOVE LINK, ....  IS YOUR ACTUAL SITE ID NUMBER WILL BE THERE.))))

Go to that link and get the navigation code for the SSNB. Copy and paste that code ON THE PAGE WHERE THE WEBRING IS POINTING TO.

What URL (page) on your site is the webring pointing to? - Log in to your webring account and look!  If the page where you have the code for the ring is NOT the same one as the ring is  pointing to, you need to correct that.

Any site that does not have the correct page listed that the webring is pointing to will have their site suspended. If the code is not corrected within 7 days, your site will be deleted from the ring, and you will have to rejoin.

If your site was suspended and you fixed the code to be on the same page that the ring is pointing to, your site will AUTOMATICALLY be re-added to the active ring of sites.

If you are using AOL... and are having trouble with the code going nuts on your pages, please CONSULT AOL'S HELP PAGESor write to AOL directly. SpydersEmpire.com cannot possibly address all of the work-around's that AOL users must endure to place codes on their sites - nor can SpydersEmpire.com explain why AOL's "html editor" or AOL itself, blows apart and all but destroys codes for webrings.  Please contact AOL directly about this—do not write to SpydersEmpire.com as there will be no reply. This much is certain - if you use a quality html editor like Microsoft FrontPage as one example to author your web pages—you will NEVER have to endure the endless problems with your codes blowing apart on your pages.

If you already have the fragment on your site, or have questions click here.
