When you woke me up this morning with hot coffee
And a smile, dear, as you stood beside the bed.
Just looking in your eyes got me to thinking-
I should being doing things for you instead.

I see the lines which care and worry carved there-
Upon a face once innocent and sweet-
I've never heard you once complain about me-
The thrice cursed day which destined that we meet.

You never griped as down the road we drifted
With me you followed my elusive dreams
No matter how I talked of silver linings
My clouds were lined with lead or so it seems.

The best thing I could do for you is leave you
And let you build a better way of life
And let you find the man who'd really love you
And truly would appreciate a wife.

Drifter, renegade, and desperado
Are just a few epithets they call me;
It really isn't that I didn't love you
It's just that it meant more, my being free.

Tonight I think I'll face my last adventure-
I'll cross the tide from which no one returns
A bullet in the brain might ease my worries
I'll try the only sure way that man learns.

I'm really tired of trials and frustrations
I want to find what death is all about-
Perhaps I'll meet you there across the river-
For now, goodbye, the drifter's checking out.
