The Bicameral Choir
Posted by
Bella Boca

When they were young,
Our parents
Heard voices,
And called it God.

They drag truculent teens,
On sunny sabbath mornings,
To Sunday School and Synagogue.
This weekly sacrifice is made in desperation;
The Voices are gone,
And they are bereft.

I understand schizophrenics hear voices.
Do they get Sundays off?

This poem is dedicated to Julian Jaynes, author of the book "The
Origin Of Consciousness In The Breakdown Of The Bicameral Mind" which
I highly recommend.
