When We Grow Up, Our Heart Dies

Sunlit reminders of days forgotten,
Days where we could appreciate sunlight,
When we could enjoy rainbows,
When we could watch butterflies and caterpillars.
Days spent tunneling away in the sand.
When we ran all afternoon through grassy fields.
Back when rolling down hills was allowed.
When we could still see tigers and puppies in the clouds.
These were them times when we could still imagine that we were
astronauts,
When we could still go to Mars and be back at lunch time.
When dirt and bugs mixed with the sweet sin of stolen chocolate chip
cookies.
We could have gourmet meals of strawberry jam and peanut butter.
When fathers and mothers would play with us on a springtime picnic.
We could spend all day chasing monsters around the neighborhood,
And cower underneath our bed sheets as the from the ones under the bed
and in the closet.
What made us forget?
When did we lose the innocence of our springs?
Who took them away, and why did we let them?
Springtime days have secede their lives to the summer of adolescent
adulthood.
Now we can not play---
Can not sing without care.
We have changed, and we can never go back.
I was once a dreamer,
I once was careless,
I could dance with the butterflies in a gentle March rain shower.
Now, the rains have given way to the scrutiny of the relentless summer
sun of adulthood.
I only see nightmares in the world now.
I care about the insignificant.
I can no longer dance.
My butterflies have turned to dust and returned to the remnants of the
cocoons.
I want back into my youthful cocoon.
To be safe form the vices and ill of my grown-up life.
I sit in the park on Sunday—
I see the children dance.
Hear them laughing, and hear them singing
I cry, because I know for what awaits them.
I have seen Tomorrow.
I am in Tomorrow.
I am yearning for my yesterdays.
I want my heart back,
The heart I lost forever.
