I step inside your shoes
Shoes no longer worn
Sitting with your coffee
Though your cigarettes I scorn

I do your crossword puzzles
And I handle your family calls
I kiss boo boos and wipe at tears
Make a home inside these walls

I share your love of wine
Though my tastes run more to red
I do not share your social skills
Words so diplomatically said

I do not have your blue eyes
But I get the early gray hairs
And your face I remember clearly
Because it’s the face my sister now wears

I cannot feel your physical pain
Since no cancer eats at me
But there is a hole inside myself
A place where your love used to be

And though I feel you with us
I’m lonely in so many ways
I miss you so much mommy
As I wear your shoes today
