must've been early august,
that night at stage fort park,
i remember because of the stars,
that's what acid does.

you had golden locks inside your hair,
i remember you pointing to the sky,

'look, man, did 'ya ever think?'

and what i thought was how damn good
it would feel to know god,
or at least something to fill in the empty places.
even back then i was tired of searching
for peace in cinnamon faces
and drinking myself to sleep.
even then all there was
was the night
and a thousand more to go.

even then i knew my thirst for deliverance
was nothing more than a scattering of prisons
across black-sky mornings and blue-sky visions.

i needed something to believe
and the neighborhood push sold it cheap
and you had an infant mad religion.

so with each trip unfolding
i looked for signs in the bleeding skies,
signs of god, signs of salvation,
signs of haunted songs in the brain

in wild nights of middle summer,
like that night at stage fort park
when you pointed to the sky
and asked,
'hey, man, did 'ya ever think?'

yeah.
i remember the stars.
that's what acid does.
