"Supergirl"
Posted by Beth Lynne Clewley
It was raining on the day you were laid to rest. Everyone kept saying it was fitting weather For such a gloomy occassion. But inside I smiled, for like me, you always loved the rain. I watched it fall cascading down the passenger side window A million tiny tears, A million angels celebrating...I pretended I was on my way to a ticker tape parade. At 7, with a vivid imagination, in a train of cars with headlights All aglow, and police officers directing traffic and crowds, it Wasn't hard to do...even the bleak, black hearse became a beautiful Float, Because it carried you... You...who didn't mind reading "The Velveteen Rabbit" For the umpteenth time before bed You...who always caught me stealing the cookie dough But pretended not to notice. You...who made me believe that I was the most Beautiful little ballerina, ever to have two left feet. I looked at you lying there, there was no S on your chest, Even still, you were my Superwoman, and breast cancer was your Final defeat, your kryptonite. Laying the sunflowers beside you, I Felt the child in me fading away, so I did the only thing I knew to Do...taking the scarf from your folded hands...I carried on your Legacy...with your magical cape on my back...I, Trinity's daughter, Became SuperGirl...and set out to conquer the world.
