“I want to take you out to dinner.”
I thought to myself: what a nice gesture.
But when the check came,
by habit I reached for my wallet,
and you did nothing to stop me.I almost loved you the night we went dancing.
You said that you wanted to be alone with me
on a dance floor because you liked the way I moved.
But when we walked through the doors, into the crowded room,
you separated from me and made your way to the dance floor,
without me.
I almost loved you that night you called
and said you were thinking about me.
But when you got another call
and clicked over to answer it,
you forgot I was on the other line
and never clicked back.
I almost loved you when you said I was the best.
But then you called out another mans name in bed.
You denied doing that
and blamed me for insecurities.
I almost loved you when you told me the truth
about being with that other man.
But then you said it wasn’t your fault
because he kissed you first.
I almost loved you that time you asked
for one more chance.
You asked to spend the night with me
but said you just needed to run home
and grab a few things.
You said you would be right back.
You never came back.
I lit candles and poured wine.
I put on soft music
and laid on my bed wearing nothing
but scented body oil.
And you never came back.
I almost loved you.
But you made damn sure that would never happen.
