"Another Son"
I went to war, I know not why.
My country asked if I would die.
My life was still a shade of green,
I'd not yet lived to be nineteen.
I could not run, I could not hide
Only swallow up my foolish pride.
No time to turn the springtime sod,
No time to gaze on goldenrod.
So on the way, I wave good-bye
And wonder if it's time to die.
My mother said, "Write to me son".
And Uncle Sam, "Son, here's your gun".
The time went by so slowly then,
To fight a war we could not win.
We shook, and prayed, and sang our song
And wondered if we'd get the 'gong'.
And day to day we lived like moles,
All buried in our shallow holes.
At night the sky would flash with red,
We knew a son somewhere was dead.
And then we shook, and prayed, and cried
Please, thank you Lord, not me to die.
All night we lay there, side by side,
No where to go, no where to hide.
The sergeant said, 'It's time to go,
Lets give the damned a little show".
He led us far onto the land
With trees and grass and lots of sand.
And then the holes, they did appear,
We saw the war, death surely near.
Our cries were quiet and quite humane,
How do we, Lord, not go insane?
At night a flash right overhead,
We knew another son was dead.
Too many flashes in the night,
We all had lost the will to fight.
At home another son who's green,
Who'd not yet lived to be nineteen
Was ready now to take the place,
Of someone's son's dead pallid face.
Whose parents got him in a bag,
And Uncle Sam provides the flag.
DAMN ALL WARS
