"Beauty"

I met an old woman all wrinkled and worn
With stories untold by the lines in her face
It brought to my mind the brevity of youth
Such thoughts that I always prefer to displace

Just how is it really that beauty’s defined
Is it really a thing we can smell, touch and hold
Is it something we seek in a pretty face
Or in diamonds or roses as their petals unfold

This "ugly" old woman had glorious words
With the wisdom of life in the stories she told
She spoke of life’s joys and of fond memories
With such dignified grace she embraced being old!

She taught me a lesson we seldom will hear
That to chase after youth is so wasteful and vain
I wish I could mimic the beauty of her
And meet aging without a disgruntled disdain
